My Botany/Zoology class went on a field trip today to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We went hiking on a trail and what do you know, we were right by Elkmont, the abandoned mountain resort thing. There were a ton of old rotted out houses and they were all freaking awesome! I love abandoned things, but I forgot about Elkmont, so I'm really glad I got see it today. The person you see in the pics is my friend, by the way.

So these cabins are just sitting there, waiting to be explored? I feel like most places like this on the east coast are fenced off.

Well, kinda. You aren't supposed to explore the cabins ("no tresspassing" signs everywhere), but people do anyway. There rarely are any park rangers around, so you can do what you want basically. If you do get caught (my friend has before), they basically just tell you off and then tell you not to do it again. That's about it. The reason the cabins are still there is because its a historical site. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elkmont,_…
